IPv4, IPv6 and dual-stack — in plain English
Every device on the internet needs a public address so replies can find their way back. The original scheme, IPv4, uses addresses like 203.0.113.42 — but there are only about 4 billion of them and the world ran out. IPv6 fixes that with vastly longer addresses like 2606:4700:4700::1111, enough for every device many times over.
Most networks are in transition. A dual-stack connection gives you both an IPv4 and an IPv6 address at the same time; plenty of home and office networks are still IPv4-only. This page shows exactly what you have. If the IPv6 box reads "not detected," your network just hasn't enabled it — that's normal and nothing to fix.
Managing servers or client networks? Your public IP is what you allow-list on firewalls, and your mail server's IP is what determines email deliverability and blocklist status. If you run mail for clients, check a domain against DNS blocklists or run a full domain health check.

- What is my IP address?
- Your IP address is the public number the internet uses to reach your network — every site you visit sees it. The address at the top of this page is the one you're connecting from right now. Depending on your network you may have an IPv4 address, an IPv6 address, or both.
- What's the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
- IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 (four numbers). The internet ran out of them years ago, so IPv6 was introduced — longer addresses like 2606:4700:4700::1111 that provide effectively unlimited space. Many networks now run 'dual-stack' (both at once); most home and office networks are still IPv4-only, which is completely normal.
- Why does this page show both an IPv4 and an IPv6 address?
- A single connection only reveals one address family, so to show both we detect them independently: your browser quietly makes one request pinned to an IPv4-only endpoint and one pinned to an IPv6-only endpoint, and reads back the address each returns. If the IPv6 box says 'not detected', your network simply doesn't have IPv6 — nothing is broken.
- Why does it show two (or more) different IP addresses?
- You're on a multi-WAN or load-balanced connection — you have more than one internet line and your router spreads traffic across them, so different connections leave through different WANs and reveal different public IPs. This tool checks several independent destinations, so it surfaces and lists all of them. Every address shown is genuinely yours. The same thing can happen behind some VPNs or carrier-grade NAT pools.
- Is my IP address private information?
- Your public IP is visible to every server you connect to by design — it isn't a secret, but it can reveal your rough location and ISP. We don't log or store it; detection happens live in your browser. If you're behind a VPN or Cloudflare WARP, the address shown is the VPN's, not your real one.
- How do I check if my IP or mail server is blacklisted?
- Your browsing IP usually isn't your mail server.
